Will Chemicals Stain Composite Decking?

Home » blog » Will Chemicals Stain Composite Decking?

WPC deckng is tougher and more stain-resistant than regular wood floors. But, some chemicals can still mess it up, causing stains, discoloration, or damage, especially if left on too long or not cleaned right away. Here’s a list of common culprits:

1. Oily stuff

Sources: BBQ grease, car oil, vegetable oils (like pine oil), etc.
Effects: Oils can seep into the surface, leaving nasty stains. If not cleaned quickly, even small spills can become permanent eyesores.
Prevention: Wipe up spills ASAP with an absorbent cloth and use a mild cleaner. For stubborn stains, go for a non-corrosive degreaser.

2. Harsh cleaners

Sources: Bleach, ammonia, acidic or alkaline cleaners.
Effects: These can wreck the surface, especially if they’re not meant for WPC floors. Bleach and ammonia can cause discoloration, strip the finish, and make the floor rough and stain-prone.
Prevention: Stick to cleaners made for WPC. If you must use strong stuff, dilute it and test in an inconspicuous spot first.

3. Food and drinks

Sources: Pigmented stuff like red wine, coffee, juice, soy sauce, ketchup, etc.
Effects: Artificial colors can seep in and leave lasting stains if not wiped up quickly. WPC is more stain-resistant than wood, but it’s not invincible.
Prevention: Clean spills immediately. For colored liquids, use warm water and a mild cleaner. Regular floor cleaner helps prevent stains.

4. Pool chemicals

Sources: Chlorine, acidic cleaners, etc.
Effects: These can speed up fading, especially with prolonged exposure, leading to discoloration, wear, or even cracks.
Prevention: Keep chemicals away from the floor. Use a waterproof barrier or clean regularly to avoid splashes.

5. Acidic or alkaline substances

Sources: Some household cleaners, stain removers, or industrial cleaners.
Effects: Strong acids or alkalis can damage the surface, causing fading, loss of shine, or even corrosion.
Prevention: Be cautious—dilute strong cleaners and avoid direct contact. Test in a hidden area first.

6. Air pollution and UV rays

Sources: Long-term sun exposure, air pollutants like dust, acid rain, etc.
Effects: UV rays speed up fading, especially outdoors. Pollutants can settle on the surface, ruining the look.
Prevention: Use UV-protective coatings or apply floor wax regularly. Clean often to prevent dust buildup.

How to clean and maintain WPC decking:

Daily cleaning: Use a soft broom or vacuum to remove dust and debris. Avoid hard brushes to prevent scratches.
Deep cleaning: Wipe with warm water and a mild cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals. For tough stains, use a WPC-specific cleaner.
Oil stains: Use a non-corrosive degreaser—no harsh solvents.
Avoid scratches: Don’t drag heavy or sharp objects across the floor.

With proper care, your WPC decking will stay looking great for years!
